Universal Clipboard: Copy on iPhone, Paste on Mac

Copy a two-factor code on your iPhone, press ⌘V on your Mac, and it just pastes — when it works, Universal Clipboard feels like magic. When it doesn't, there's no error message, no status icon, nothing. Here's the exact recipe, the failure checklist, and the limitation Apple doesn't advertise.

The requirements (all of them, on both devices)

• Signed into the same Apple ID
• Bluetooth on and Wi-Fi on (they don't need the same network, but Wi-Fi radios must be enabled)
• Handoff enabled — Mac: System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff; iPhone: Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity
• Devices physically near each other (Bluetooth range)

Then there is nothing to press: copy on one device, paste on the other within roughly two minutes. The item expires after that window — a privacy feature, and a common source of "it stopped working" reports.

When it doesn't work: the fix ladder

1. Check the same-Apple-ID assumption. Work Macs are often on a different ID than personal iPhones — this silently rules the feature out.
2. Toggle Bluetooth off/on on both devices. Fixes the majority of transient failures.
3. Toggle Handoff off/on on the Mac, then on the iPhone.
4. Copy again and paste faster — you may simply be outside the 2-minute window.
5. Restart both devices. The Continuity stack occasionally wedges; a restart resets it.
6. Check for large content. A paragraph syncs instantly; a 4K video can take long enough to look broken. Wait for the progress indicator on paste.

The limitation: it's still a one-item clipboard

Universal Clipboard syncs Apple's single clipboard slot across devices — it doesn't add history. Copy a second thing anywhere and the first is gone everywhere. The two tools solve different problems and stack well:

• Universal Clipboard moves the current item between devices.
• A clipboard manager like Vee keeps every item on your Mac — including things that arrived from your iPhone and were then overwritten. Press ⌘⇧V and the code you copied three items ago is still there.

Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows or Android?

No — Apple devices on the same Apple ID only. Cross-platform alternatives exist (KDE Connect, some cloud clipboard tools) but trade away the zero-setup integration.

Can I turn Universal Clipboard off but keep Handoff?

Not separately — the clipboard piggybacks on Handoff. Disabling Handoff disables both.
