Alfred Clipboard History: How It Works

Alfred is one of the most-loved Mac launchers, and a lot of people discover its clipboard history feature by accident while exploring the Powerpack. Alfred's clipboard history requires Powerpack

Free Alfred is a Spotlight-style launcher with no clipboard features at all. Clipboard History is one of the flagship reasons people buy the Powerpack add-on (~£34 one-time, or ~£59 for the megasupporter/lifetime tier). Once purchased:

1. Open Alfred Preferences → Features → Clipboard History
2. Toggle it on, and set a hotkey (Alfred ships with none assigned by default — this trips people up)
3. Choose how long to remember text (options up to "forever") and whether to remember images/files too

Trigger the hotkey and a searchable list opens in Alfred's signature centered window — type to filter, arrow keys to browse, return to paste.

What it's good at

• Search-first design. Alfred's fuzzy search is excellent — if you vaguely remember a phrase from something you copied last week, this is a fast way to find it.
• One tool for everything. If you already trigger Alfred constantly for app launching and file search, clipboard history is one more reason not to add a second menu-bar app.

Where people hit its limits

• It's paid, and it's not standalone. You can't get just the clipboard feature — Powerpack is the whole launcher suite.
• The window opens center-screen, not at your text cursor — same context-switch cost as most menu-bar clipboard tools.
• No favorites/pinning workflow as polished as dedicated clipboard apps — Alfred treats it as one feature among many, not the product.

Can you run both?

Yes, without conflict — plenty of people use Alfred for launching apps and files, and a dedicated app like Vee for clipboard history at the cursor. They don't compete for the same hotkey unless you assign one to both.
